Social media – I love it.  It opens the door to all kinds of friendships, collaborations, and inspiration that we didn’t have access to on a global basis just twenty years ago.  I keep up with a lot of my fans and fellow photographers (plus artists, writers – lots of interesting people in my circles), and we interact a lot.  The world is a lot smaller of a place than we sometimes think – why not have as much fun with as many people as you can while we’re here?

Now, on to today’s image…  

Our frigid temperatures continue as winter wears on here in lower Michigan, but it’s brought the most lovely sunsets with it. I’m a bit of a fan of more abstract images, and shot this while experimenting a bit with capturing the sunset shining on a bit of mane.  Photographing during golden hour is my absolute favorite time to shoot, and you can tell when looking through my images.  🙂

The snow is sparkling… by Michigan Professional Equine Photographer Laura Adams

Our days have been brutally cold, but they’ve come to us bearing some incredible sunsets – which is rather unusual for the lower part of Michigan in the winter. On rare days like this, I sometimes muster up enough fortitude to venture out into the elements for a few moments, armed with a camera, so that I might capture a bit of the beauty that would otherwise go unwitnessed.

Such was the case the evening this was shot. There was an amazing sunset happening just behind a horse pasture, lending an amazing orange-ish red glow to this handsome little chestnut gelding. As the sun spilled out from behind the trees and illuminated his form, I waited for him to pick his head up and look at me. With all of the warm light in the frame, you wouldn’t guess that we had temperatures in the single digits. Being chronically allergic to snow and cold temperatures, I make a habit of not going out into the weather as often as I can get away with it – but capturing magical moments like this does make it worth the pain.

Serenity. It’s under-rated.

This was one of those amazing winter days where the snow  gently blanketed everything, the air was still, and despite how cold you’d think it was, it actually wasn’t bad (our past few Michigan winters have gifted me with the ability to think that anything above 0 degrees Fahrenheit that doesn’t involve a blustery sub-zero wind is quite bearable.)

The horses here were quiet and still that day, and seemed to enjoy my company as I took in the beautiful view along side them. One of them stopped, framing the woods in front of us, so that I could capture the sight to share with you. I thought to myself as I was with them that this must be what serenity feels like: peace, beauty, companionship – and I was so happy that I had my camera to document that moment.

We’ve been fortunate enough this year to have had only one real snow storm here in southern Michigan so far this winter (if you are one of the few who love that kind of weather – sorry – I can’t stand the stuff!), and I made it a point to go out in it and shoot. As much as I hate the cold and snow, I will admit that it IS beautiful while it’s falling, and there is nothing quite so pretty as horses, covered in snow, with snow flakes tangling in manes and tails as they drop from the sky. It can be downright magical. So, I force myself to go out in it, often using the beasts in my own pasture as my models and muses. Every equine in my own barn is sooo over being photographed that my biggest challenge is keeping them out of my face and far enough away that I can actually photograph them appropriately (well, that and getting to get the shots I want, while staying warm, and doing it all in as little time as possible…)

Oh, Baby! It’s Oakley Raven | Newborn Session by Michigan Photographer Laura Adams

She was much anticipated, and arrived (early) to great fan fare.

Now, I don’t have a lot of opportunities to photograph newborns.  Yes, I’m quite capable.  Yes, I enjoy it…  but…I don’t specialize in the wee ones (unless they also happen to be horses or dogs) for a myriad of reasons.

Sometimes, though – it’s pretty awesome to step outside the norm.

I photographed her parents’ wedding.  To this day, it’s one of my all-time favorite days of photographing.  I love them, they’re awesome people, and when I found out that they were expecting – AND that they wanted me to photograph their bundle of joy – well, I absolutely had to do it.

Like I suppose all parents-to-be do, there were carefully made plans, lots of preparations, and an orderly and expected method to the timeline.  But Oakley had other plans.  She arrived really early.  So early, in fact, that there was an extended stay in the NICU, which meant that her photo op was delayed until she was able to come home.  By that time, the sweet angel was about two months old and weighed all of five pounds (ugh, the tiny little fingers and teeny pudgy toes were enough to send any lover of cuteness into fits of unbeknownst proportions.  I kid you not.)

Unlike most super models, she was a doll to work with.  She napped.  She did a lot of people watching (mainly, of the lady who kept getting in her face, making weird noises, and re-arranging her extremities).  She tolerated multiple outfit and set changes.  SHE ATE.  SHE ATE WELL.  And was generally amazing and awesome to be around.

I don’t see myself changing my specialties (equines, high school seniors, and high school seniors with horses) any time soon, but I would definitely agree to work with tiny people again.

Look out Gerber and Baby Gap, there’s a new model in town!
